It’s New Years Eve
On what has been quite a year. I created this account after following writers Yrsa Daley Ward in her Substack “The Utter” and Beth Kempton whose books “Wabi Sabi” and “The Way of the Fearless writer” have really inspired me.
Today is the day my friends. Tomorrow will not do.
I’ll be posting my latest poems, paintings, gigs and news and that which has inspired me from other writers artists and musicians I’ve discovered or rediscovered too. I look forward to hearing from and being inspired by you too.
You can also find me @poemstosootheyoursoul and @katedefreitasart on Instagram
The line “Only Connect” from E.M.Forster’s Howard’s End keeps surfacing in my conscious thoughts. I’m reading “Why I write poetry” edited by Ian Humphrey’s. It’s full of essays from 25 poets who talk about why they write.
Andrew McMillan says “ Write the work that you wish you’d had a chance to read when you were starting out.” So here we go!
Please let me know what resonates with and what you’d like more of.
In the meantime Happy New Year to you all and here is my last poem of 2023.
A MOMENT
A diagnosis
Is a portal
A gift
An opportunity
To see life
As it really is
Open the envelope
Who has won the award?
A lottery
But you are a winner
As you are handed
A kaleidoscope
Of possibilities
Jewels made from
Fragments of the precious moment
My daughter Serafina and I
Final day of radiotherapy
Singing “ I’m a survivor”
In the hospital car park
We danced
Holding nothing back
Perplexed disapproving stares
Did not dampen our passion
Laughter
Quads aching
Core hurting
Tears threatening
A gurgle of gratitude
Working it’s way up my body
Thank you
Thank you for this
All of it.
